Abstract
A numerical approach based on the finite element method (FEM) and the beam propagation method (BPM) is newly formulated for the design and modeling of static strain optic (SSO) and acoustooptic (AO) devices, and unified software for SSO and AO devices is presented. In this software, the static stress and the surface acoustic wave (SAW) analysis methods are linked to the optical waveguide analysis method. Numerical examples are shown for strain-induced optical waveguides on LiNbO/sub 3/ substrates and AO tunable filters with weighted coupling using focused SAW.
