Abstract
The development of new technology may continue to reproduce gender inequality. To address this, feminist speculative approaches are needed that reveal unconscious assumptions, challenge dominant narratives, and imagine alternative narratives. To explore this, we conducted a process combining speculative design, feminist interpretation, and reflective processes. It began with design students creating design fictions, followed by feminist theorists interpreting the fictions, and ended with design educators reflecting on implications for further design. In this paper, we present four cases of investigating feminist futures, covering topics such as reproduction rights, gender identity, and male dominance in technological development. Results show the value of fictions as speculative probe, inviting feminist interpretation that reveals hidden assumptions and ethical issues and inequality emerging from design. Lastly, we emphasize the unfinished nature of the process and advocate for a mindset of staying with trouble in imagining and debating futures of gender (in)equality.
