Abstract

The résidence of a medieval aristocratie family of knights in Strasbourg : the house of the Von Westhus. An archaeological study of the elevations of a house located at 8, rue des Cordonniers in Strasbourg has re-established the original architectural conception of a medieval aristocratic residence. When the architectural elements are analysed (plan, structure, elevations, internal mode of functioning, techniques of constructions), and confronted with contemporary written sources, the combined details help in understanding the nature of a noble urban residence built around 1304 by a family of knights. Such an approach to the house, henceforth perceived as the expression of an aristocratic aesthetic, opens avenues of historical interpretation concerning the choice of symbolic architectural elements in the urban society of this important Rhenish city.
