Abstract
The question about lake-level fluctuations in the Jura and Subalpine ranges at the time of the Neolithic and Bronze Age lake-dwelling development is discussed using sedimentological analysis of holocene lacustrine infillings. The study of the present sedimentary processes in Jurassian lakes allows us to establish a sedimentary model. The reconstruction of the level fluctuations of 21 lakes during the last 9 millennia is based on this model. Correlations between lake-level fluctuations in the Jura, glacier and timberline variations in the Swiss and Austrian Alps, and lastly the atmospheric 14C record argue for the climatic significance of these Holocene lake-level fluctuations and for the influence of the varying solar activity on the climate. Thanks to the dendrochronological datings, these prehistoric lake-dwellings appear to be very interesting sites for a reconstruction of Holocene climate evolution and processes.
