Abstract
A simple model for bubble plumes originating from a suddenly started gas source at the sea-bed is described. Tentative values for the empirical model parameters are proposed and discussed. The governing equations are integrated numerically and the results are compared with similarity solutions and available experimental data. The model appears to perform satisfactorily, but further experimental investigations are required to improve the empirical input and better assess the applicability of the model. Results computed for parameter ranges of practical interest are included.
