Abstract
Underwater sound is recognized as an important environmental issue because of the effects of sound on marine life. Government agencies and regulators worldwide are showing an increasing interest in sound-source-verification (SSV) techniques, analysis, and results. Analysis provides the necessary information to assess the impact of sound on marine mammals, which can range from behavioral changes to auditory damage, as well as to assess the impact on the environment. Marine mammals generally rely heavily on their sense of hearing for communication, prey location, predator detection, navigation, and echolocation, so prolonged exposure to continuous sound is potentially harmful.
