Abstract

ABSTRACT Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, contributes to the country’s economy, employment levels, and foreign currency revenues. Because of its long history, stunning setting and prime position, it has become an indispensable center for all important economic and industrial activities. This paper reveals the profile of Dhaka city and also discusses rising issues: the quality of the industrial environment, export processing zone, and center for foreign and local investment.This city is still facing challenges in terms of being a sustainable city. Improper housing planning, population growth, inadequate water and sanitation facilities, rapid urbanisation and pollution, and slums, all are major contributing challenges preventing the residentsand city engaging with sustainability. This Viewpoint paper presents empirical evidences of these challenges. In conclusion, this paper suggests some effective policy recommendations to make the city more preferable and inhabitable for residents by minimising the sustainability challenges.
