Abstract

The Iranian people have suffered much. At the end of the 1980s, Iran emerged from a decade-long war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq, experiencing the loss of at least 200 000 lives and massive economic damage.1 In 2006, international sanctions, imposed in response to Iran's nuclear programme, had inevitable consequences for health.2 Yet, despite these challenges, successive Iranian governments have undertaken two major health-system reforms. A new analysis in The Lancet by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 Iran Collaborators3 based on data from 1990 to 2019 from the GBD project investigated health trends during these complex times.
