Understanding the anti-corrosion mechanism and performance of ionic liquids in desalination, petroleum, pickling, de-scaling, and acid cleaning applications

Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) are sure to attract numerous researchers for their utility as corrosion inhibitors in different industries because of their low toxicity and high efficiency. This review addresses the most recent works dealing with the use of different types of ionic liquids in desalination, petroleum, pickling, de-scaling, and acid cleaning applications. Most research here focused on the anti-corrosion properties of ionic liquids in practical applications. In addition, the explanations and the mechanisms of ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors have been clearly discussed.
