Abstract

The use is described of simple student examples in inferential statistics to develop and clarify statistical ideas such as population, sample, parameter, statistics and sampling distribution. The examples involve deriving the sampling distribution of a variety of sample statistics from a simple population. Collecting and collating numerical data describing these distributions enables students to compare the properties of statistics such as the mean, median and geometric mean. Data on the distribution of variances and standard deviations enables properties of the ‘n‐version’ and ‘(n ‐‐ 1 )‐version’ of the formulae to be compared. Finally, these examples lead to a consideration of advanced ideas in estimation such as bias, efficiency and consistency.
