Abstract

Diversity is a key management issue for media companies serving increasingly diverse audiences. This study uses FCC employment reports, census data, and industry data over 30 years to examine the structural and organizational factors related to minority hiring in U.S. commercial television stations. The study finds external variables explain most of the variance and draws on organizational-diversity theory to conclude industry leaders don't yet view workforce diversity as a strategic management issue.
