Abstract

Over the course of the year ending March 2022, England and Wales recorded a total of 2,887 cases of so called “honour”-based abuse (HBA). This was a 6% increase over the previous year’s figures, indicating that this unfortunate phenomenon is on the rise. HBA predominately affects women and girls and with a concerted multiagency approach and prioritisation of survivors’ safety, it can be prevented. This article explores some of the most prominent cases of HBA in the last two decades and provides guidance on how midwives and students can best support victim-survivors.
