Abstract

A study of pollution levels in twelve underground car parks has been carried out. Its purpose was to more fully understand pollution levels in such car parks to aid decisions on control measures applicable to Building Regulations and local authority enforcement. Under 'normal' conditions pollution levels were found to comply with Building Regulation and Health and Safety Executive occupational exposure air quality criteria, although in some car parks the margin of safety was small. In the event of poor climatic conditions, traffic congestion or ventilation plant failure there would be an increased risk to operatives and users. Car park management procedures should, therefore, be reviewed to take account of such possibilities, and operatives briefed as to what action to take in the event of adverse conditions. (A)
