Abstract

This article summarizes an experiment in which 11undergraduate `peer assistants' were recruited to join the regular teaching staff of graduate teaching assistants and faculty for a large physical science lecture course. The UTAs assist with active learning exercises, which replace a portion of the usual passive lecture format. This article describes the active learning techniques used and assesses improvements in learning with the implementation of UTAs.
