Abstract

In this project, an attempt has been made to pursue an in-depth study of the behavior of post-tensioned beams with unbonded tendons. Four groups of beams were tested with the following variables taken into account: different mixes of reinforcing and prestressing steel, T-beams and rectangular beams, normal and high-strength concrete, low and high ratios (l/d), and different initial stresses in the tendons. This paper describes general precracking and postcracking behavior observed in the testing of 33 beam specimens. Based on test observations and load-deflection plots, conclusions are made. A follow-up paper will contain specific items, such as the calculation of ultimate design stress for unbonded tendons and a comparison between the measured stresses and those obtained using the present ACI code equations.
