Abstract
A baroque garden in Florence : the “New Garden” in the Villa of Lappeggi. Among the gardens created in the 17th century in Florence, the garden of the Lappeggi Villa is an outstanding example of the baroque style. And, although few studies have been carried out on gardens in Florence during that period, documents from the Medici archives have enabled us to reconstruct this work with a certain accuracy, the different steps of its construction, the elements it implied and, what’s more, to identify the artists responsible for its construction - thus, underscoring the extreme importance of the workshop. The garden was commissioned by Cardinal Franco Maria de Medici, the brother of Cosmo the Third, and the work is recorded as being carried out between 1697 and 1711. Antonio Ferri was the landscape architect who designed the garden and supervised the work. Two major artists were responsible for the decoration of the garden : Anton Francesco Andreozzi directed a team of sculptors among whom were Giovan Antonio Fortini, Giovan Camillo Cateni and Girolamo Ticciati, and Giovan Battista Ciceri created the stuccos.
