Abstract

************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ An Analysis of Nouns as Stance Markers in Academic Articles in the Portuguese Language ABSTRACT: This study uses a corpus-based approach to investigate the expression of stance through noun phrases in Academic Brazilian Portuguese. The corpus of noun phrases used in order to compare the use of stance in different areas, such as the Exact Sciences, the Humanies, etc. The theoretical background used to support this research is based on Biber’s Stance Theory. Although academic texts tend to be more objective, the authors use stance markers, showing their point of view, their beliefs and discoveries. We confirmed the main hypothesis that the Exact Sciences use less stance nouns because of their more objective nature. Disciplinary differences are also seen as a way of establishing the choice of nouns in the different areas. This research is part of a larger project from the Research Group at PUCRS on the Use and Processing of Additional Languages (UPLA), which aims to help the growing number of foreign students that are coming to this university to pursue their higher education. Keywords: Academic Brazilian Portuguese; Stance; Nouns; Academic language; Speech acts.
