Abstract
This article aims to explore a little-known part of the science history, through the analysis of its development on mysticism and religious beliefs. Exposing how the scientism of the Western world has evolved and what were the contributions and heritages of religious and esoteric groups are the main subjects on this study. We know that Western civilization was under Christianity influence for centuries. Therefore, such a religious atmosphere prevented a scientific revolution through the years. However, since ancient times men from different cultures gathered themselves forming secret societies. Even if those were involved with esoteric symbolism, they were also concerned about mankind scientific development. It was through this assumption that this research had its basis with support from the Research Foundation of the State of Sao Paulo - FAPESP. This research has also counted on committed people to mankind spiritual development and at the same time, human science progress.
