Abstract

This chapter reviews the development of several kinds of sub-Terahertz photonic transmitter (PT) and photomixers for the millimeter-wave (MMW) or Terahertz frequency regime. The PTs for such applications are constructed by integrating high-power photodetectors with antennas for converting an intense optical MMW signal to an electrical signal, and then radiating that signal to the end user. It illustrates photonic wireless links at a data rate beyond 20 Gb/s for both downlink and uplink. Multiple frequencies are available from the frequency comb of a mode-locked laser. A common approach is side-band generation by deep remoting radio-frequency sinusoidal modulation of a narrow linewidth CW laser. The Wireless (W)-band exhibits a much lower propagation loss and a broader transmission window than those at the 60 and 120 GHz frequencies. The W-band has now been specified as the window for outdoor Gb/s wireless data transmission in several countries.
