Abstract

1. 1. Ultrastructural observations of the integument showed three layers: outer epicuticle, inner epicuticle and procuticle. 2. 2. Use of organic solvents for cuticular lipid removal modified the integrity of the integument. 3. 3. Lipid extracts of the pea aphid cuticle yielded 27% hydrocarbons, 20% alkyl esters, 14% fatty acid methyl esters, 13% triacylglycerols, 16% free fatty acids and 10% n-alcohols. 4. 4. Extrinsic cuticular components included free amino acids and monosaccharides originating from aphid excrement (honeydew).
