Abstract
With the aim of defining distinctive morphological characteristics of spermatogonia and preleptotene spermatocytes in monkey, we have correlated light and electron microscopic observations on adjacent thick and thin sections. On the basis of their ultrastructure itispossible to distinguish preleptotene spermatocytes (PL), dark type A (Ad), pale type A (Ap) and type B spermatogonia (B).The criteria used for the identification include their cellular and nuclear sizes, the shape of the cells, the amount of organelles, and especially, the nuclearstainingcharacteristics and chromatin patterns. Type A dark spermatogonia possess an oblong nucleus containing a deeply stained chromatin in contrast with the pale nuclei which stain very lightly. The staining pattern of some of the type A appears intermediate; thus, they could all not be categorized into Ad or Ap. The type B spermatogonia are round cellswith an increased amount of heterochromatin close to the nuclear envelope. Preleptotene spermatocytes are smaller both in cellular and in nuclear diameter than the type B spermatogonia and their nucleoplasm consists of irregular patches of con
