Abstract

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid, submandibular and palatal glands has been studied by light and electron microscopy. If the microscopical picture is dominated by a cribriform structure, the prognosis is much better than if a solid structure predominates. Since tumours with cribriform structures differ from the solid ones by the existence of acellular areas, it is tempting to conclude that the composition of the acellular areas themselves may be related to the favourable prognosis.
