Abstract
This study was initiated to examine the collagenolytic potential of the lysosomal collagenase within polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) granules when injected into normal rabbit corneas. The significance of this study is in the determination of the role that PMNL granules may play in the pathogenesis of corneal ulcerations. It has been shown that collagenolytic activity is demonstrated in corneas only when PMNLs are present, but it has not been shown that PMNLs are in anyway involved in the pathogenesis of corneal ulceration.
