Abstract

An aluminium oxynitride (AlON) powder was synthesized by carbothermal reduction nitridation (CRN) method. For this purpose, first Al2O3/C core-shell nanoparticles were prepared by the pyrolysis of Al2O3/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanocomposite precursor at 800 °C for 2 h in an argon atmosphere. Alumina/PAN precursor was prepared by ultrasonic method at room temperature. Then, by two-step thermal treatment of Al2O3/C core-shell nanoparticles at 1500–1600 °C for 2 h, followed by subsequent heating at 1750 °C for 1 h in N2 flow, AlON powder was synthesized. The sample was investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and CHNS elemental analysis.
