Abstract

The acoustic losses in single crystals of Mn-ferrite (MnxFe3-xO4; x=1.1, 1.0 and 0.82) have been studied in the temperature range of 180–650 K by applying longitudinal vibrations of 150 kHz. Loss peaks were observed at 232 and 537 K with activation energies of 0.3 and 0.8 eV, respectively. The first peak was regarded as a stress-induced relaxation of electrons between Fe2+ and Mn3+ ions on octahedral sites in Mn-rich ferrites. The second peak was ascribed to the exchange motion of cations and vacancies on octahedral sites. Both peaks were observed only along the <111> or <110> direction, and were affected by heat treatments received in the temperature range of 300–600°C.
