Abstract

A tutorial review will be given of the theory and experiments on the transmission of short optical pulses in optical fibers. The discussion will include consideration of ultimate limitations, pulse propagation at or near the zero-dispersion wavelength, equalization techniques, non-linear effects and solitons. Time-space analogies relating pulse spreading in fibers to expansion of laser beams are used as an aid to understanding.
