Abstract

The effect of simultaneous action of pulsating pressures in the permeate and feed solution on the performance of a tubular ultrafiltration membrane has been investigated. It is established that synchronized pulsations in the feed and the permeate lead to a better performance of the membrane than independent pulsations. It is also observed that application of pulsating pressure in the permeate leads to a fluctuation in the apparently steady feed pressure and causes unstability of the eventually formed gel layer. Finally a possible mechanism for the elimination of the gel layer by the synchronous pulsating pressure in the feed and the permeate is proposed.
