Abstract

This paper deals with the development of a novel Ultra Wide Band (UWB) microstrip antenna, using the Ansys HFSS 18.0.0 simulation tool and Anritsu MS4644A Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). The developed antenna consists of a patch of non-regular shape etched on an FR4 dielectric substrate, excited with a 50 Ohm microstripline, having a defected ground plane. In order to improve the bandwidth, the design of the antenna is based on staircase patch shapes, curved shapes, together with the presence of a slot and a notch of a defected ground plane. The obtained bandwidth of the antenna is 2.42–11.87 Ghz. Data concerning the radiation pattern of the antenna are shown in conjunction with a parametric study of the effect of antenna dimensions on its characteristics. The obtained results in the experimental validation step using the VNA, are quite conclusive, showing the performance of the antenna realized in terms of bandwidth and matching and also fulfilling the conditions required by the US FCC standard 3.1–10.6 Ghz bandwidth, which incorporates all the UWB standards of the world.
