Abstract

Although fractal structures have the property of self similarity and ease of repetitiveness, they remain less used in planar patterned metamaterial structures. In this context a compact Ultra Wide Band (UWB) microstrip antenna based on planar metamaterial concept is proposed. The planar metamaterial is designed by etching an array basing on Sierpinski gaskets fractal pattern and isosceles triangles respectively on the patch and the ground plane. The substrate of the designed antenna is Rogers RT 5880 with er=2.2 and 0.787 mm height. The measured impedance bandwidth ranges from 4.439 GHz to 15.785 GHz, for a less than q10 dB return loss, it is 11.346 GHz bandwidth, which represents 112%. The antenna has a radiation pattern mainly directed in the horizontal plane.
