Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of the Ukrainian filmmakers of the modern era’s silent cinema. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian context in the history of Eastern European film art is not widely known. Hence, it deserves special attention. Selected aspects of the artistic life of Oleksandr Khanzhonkov and Vera Kholodnaya are described, as well as the achievements of cinematic precursors, such as Iosif Timchenko and Alfred Fedecki. The study is an introduction to the extensive research on the issue of silent cinema in Eastern Europe of the late 19th and early 20th century.
