Abstract
Reading is a complex skill that primarily depends on the components of the reader's language knowledge that applies to understand the meaning of what he has read. Considering the modern man's need for knowledge of at least one foreign language, the paper refers to the types of reading that are used to achieve success at different levels of knowledge (intensive and extensive reading) and the application of certain strategies in order to understand the text. About 6,500 titles from various fields are available to the users of the Užice library's collection of books in foreign languages, which are most represented in English, Russian, German and French, and in a smaller number in over fifty other languages. Bilingual and multilingual publications are especially important for learning, when one of the languages is Serbian. The selection of a book, which should be aligned with the level of knowledge of the language in which it is read, librarian can make it easier with an adequate recommendation and reference to the effective searches of the fund in the Kobis+NBU database, which are presented in the paper.
