Abstract

The article traces the motif of the magician in Polish magical folk tales and belief tales. The analysis of several dozens of texts from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century has revealed the complexity of the magician character: on one hand, it is close to demonic creatures (magical abilities including shapeshifting and sorcery); on the other hand, it resembles scholars from the past, that is priests or alchemists (black clothing, the ability to read and use spells from forbidden books).
