Abstract
Under certain conditions the polymeric, diamagnetic ruthenium carbonyl iodide Ru(CO) 2J 2 will react with complex-forming ligands (X) having a free electron pair. In this way, with N-bases such as pyridine, o-phenanthroline and also with triphenylphosphine, -arsine, -stibine, and tri- cyclohexyl-phosphine, compounds of the RuX 2(CO) 2J 2 type are formed which are non-electrolytes. With potassium cyanide K 2[Ru(CO) 2(CN) 2J 2] a complex compound showing ionic structure is obtained. On the other hand, aromatic isonitriles form tetra isonitrile compounds, e.g. Ru( pCNC 6H 4OCH 3) 4J 2, by total substitution of carbon monoxide. It is characteristic that stable complex ruthenium carbonyl iodides can only be obtained by using ligands that are bound to the metal by a mesomeric double bond.
