Abstract

A new breed of risk analysis may be coming to the rule‐making process, if Republican lawmakers get their way. The Republican Contract with America, among other things, entails a new regulatory contract for America, which may impact on how federal agencies conduct science in the future. The regulatory contract is one chunk of the Republican Contract that the Science Committee has a lot to say about, with primary jurisdiction over Title III of HR9, the Job Creation and Wage Enhancement Act of 1995, which tackles risk assessment head on. Accordingly, hearings were already under way last week before both the Science and Commerce committees in keeping with the timetable of the promised 100‐day deadline. The risk assessment section of the bill, Title III, likely will be marked up this week, congressional sources say, if few snags arise during the Administration's testimony, which was slated for last Thursday and Friday.
