Abstract
Vehicle fuel consumption is affected by tyre rolling resistance, but the reduction in fuel consumption is only about 20 per cent of the reduction in rolling resistance. Tyre rolling resistance can be considered as comprising both a speed independent and a speed dependent portion, with the speed independent portion being the significant part under normal vehicle operating conditions. The tyre rolling resistance can be reduced by changes in operating conditions, such as inflation pressure and vehicle operating cycles, and also through tyre design modifications. The radial ply tyre would currently appear to offer the best design features for minimum tyre energy losses, and although further significant reductions in tyre rolling resistance are possible with this construction, any large reduction is likely to be at the expense of other tyre properties. However, there is still room for some improvement whilst maintaining current performance levels in these other properties, the actual order of this improvement being somewhat dependent on the current position of individual manufacturer's tyres.
