Abstract

There is divergence of opinions as to whether the term brackish water should be restricted to fresh water mixed with sea water, or whether inland saline waters of medium salinity should be included. According to Redeke (1935): “Brackwasser ist ein Gemisch von Susswasser und Meerwasser s.str.” (brackish water is a mixture of fresh water and sea water s.str), thus excluding the inland waters of medium salinity. But since the organisms found in these inland waters are often identical with those occurring in “brackish” sea water, such a division is untenable to the biologist. Moreover mixing of fresh water and sea water sometimes occurs even in inland brackish waters, where these have an. underground supply of sea water, as in the present study. Remane (1971) therefore designates all waters of medium salinity as brackish waters, regardless of their origin.
