Abstract

The present article uses the finite element method (FEM) as the principal analytical tool, first to derive the natural frequency of the bogie frame mechanical body under different loading conditions and modes of operations, then to explore structural reactions generated by different static strength loads, and finally to evaluate the required safety margins. In performing our analyses, we use the specific example of the Electrical Multiple Units (EMU'S) being developed for the Nankang Line of the Taipei Rapid Transit System (TRTS) of the city of Taipei, Taiwan. Safety values for fatigue loads are calculated by comparing the calculated stress range with the allowable stress range for the same mean stress. The allowable stresses include a safety factor of 1.5 and the calculated safety values must not be less than 1.0.
