Abstract
Dimethylaminocyanobiphenyl (DMACB) has been synthesized in view of nonlinear optical applications in the visible. In this communication, we report the strong nonlinear absorption of DMACB crystal in its noncentrosymmetric form which could be useful for optical-limiting applications in the visible. The transmitted intensity of a 230 μm thick crystal was measured at λ=532 nm as a function of beam intensity and polarization. For light polarized parallel to the long molecular axis, the nonlinear absorption coefficient is 130±40 cm GW −1. Various hypothesis to explain this value are discussed.
