Abstract

The Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) are jointly working on two projects which may have significant implications for the development of biotechnology and chemical waste degradation. One project is the Biosystems Concept, a five-year research plan designed to develop and select both microorganisms and biological treatment systems which can reduce or eliminate the risks from hazardous waste. The second project is the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program, where OSWER and ORD will fund and evaluate a minimum of ten pilot-scale or full-scale demonstrations of alternative technologies at Superfund sites per year through 1990. The poster paper presents an overview of these programs, specifically focusing on their goals and objectives, and the implications for the development/application of microbial degradation.
