Abstract
Problems with hazardous waste sites have led to the limitation of land disposal practices for certain classes of chemicals. EPA’s National Priority List of hazardous waste sites includes 888 sites (Superfund sites) that have to be cleaned up in the near future because of their potential for human health hazards. The Office of Emergency and Remedial Response (OERR), within the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER), recently issued guidelines to increase the use of alternative technologies at Superfund sites. Also, in response to the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and OSWER have established a formal program to accelerate the development, demonstration, and use of new or innovative technologies.
