Abstract

Twitter is a social media platform with hundreds of millions of users around the world. Twitter has had a discernible impact across the twenty‐first‐century zeitgeist in the broad reshaping of global politics, activism and social movements, government social control efforts, corporate marketing strategies, journalism, celebrity influence, and mass media agenda‐setting, among other issues. Of the many contributions Twitter has made to popular culture, the “hashtag” (#) is a notable standout. Twitter and hashtags have been used by activists to draw increased awareness to systemic injustices, helping to both organize and accelerate various global social movements. This entry highlights the relevance of Twitter in relation to the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, #MeToo, and Black Lives Matter.
