Abstract

The substitution for Cu by Al in YBa 2(Cu 1− x Al x ) 3O 7− δ has been studied by means of high voltage electron microscopy (HVEM). The higher oxygen coordination of the impurity ions in the chain plane leads to a twin refinement for weakly doped samples ( x⩽0.03) and to the formation of microdomains at higher concentrations of the impurity. A displacement wave which provides a reduction of the strain energy of the distortion between the microdomains forms the tweed structure. The analysis of the diffraction streaks of tweed by in-situ-heating shows that the wavelength of the modulation increases if the oxygen concentration decreases.
