Abstract
A three phase to five phase configured twenty pulse AC-DC converter fed 3-level modular multilevel inverter (MMLI) based vector controlled induction motor drive (VCIMD) is presented in this work. To limit the total harmonic distortion (THD) in the utility current as per IEEE-519 standard, a twenty pulse AC-DC converter is used at the input end of the proposed drive. A three phase system is converted into two sets of five phase AC voltages to achieve twenty pulses in each cycle of the supply current. At the drive end, a 3-level MMLI is used to improve the steady state, dynamic and power quality performance of the drive. An indirect vector control with sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) is used to control an induction motor and 3-level MMLI, respectively. A twenty pulse AC-DC converter fed 3-level inverter based VCIMD is modelled and its performance is simulated in Simulink/MATLAB environment to demonstrate its effectiveness for medium power application.
