Abstract

A 54-pulse AC-DC converter fed 7-level new cascaded voltage source inverter (VSI) based vector controlled induction motor drive (VCIMD) is presented in this work. An extended-delta and delta-polygon configured transformer based 54-pulse AC-DC converter is used at the supply end to reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) of the utility current within limit as specified in an IEEE-519 standard. The steady state, dynamic and power quality performances of an induction motor are improved by a 7-level new cascaded inverter. Two separate and dependent algorithms are used to control an induction motor and a 7-level cascaded inverter. A delta-polygon based 54-pulse AC-DC converter fed 7-level inverter based VCIMD is modelled and its performance is simulated in Simulink/MATLAB environment to demonstrate its effectiveness.
