Ever since police officer Joseph Somma's life was saved by a bulletproof vest, he's been indebted to the materials scientists and engineers who developed that high-tech piece of apparel. creators of the miracle fabric that absorbed the deadly energy of the bullets meant for him are the true unsung heroes, Somma says at the beginning of a three-part miniseries on materials science that premieres next week on Public Broadcasting Service television stations. program, called The Stuff of Dreams, explores the impact that new materials have on our daily lives and our world. And it gives viewers a taste of the even greater wonders that materials scientists and engineers hope to unveil in the future.
