Abstract

Understanding how Coxiella burnetii causes Q fever has proven to be exceedingly difficult owing to its obligate intracellular nature. Sequencing the C. burnetii genome revealed the presence of genes that could encode a type IV secretion system highly homologous to the Dot/Icm system in Legionella pneumophila. Recently, two groups have exploited this similarity by expressing the C. burnetii dot/icm homologues in a surrogate host, L. pneumophila, to determine their function.
