Abstract

[EN]Tourism has a strong economic expression in the Portuguese society, and is one of the most relevant sectors of activity for the country. The extensive and diversed Portuguese coastline, one of Portugal’s biggest attractives, sets off Coastal tourism as the main sponsor of the sector. It is also important to empahsize the notorious evolution of other areas and niche markets that are rapidly transforming into strong inducers of growth for the domestic tourism market, where we highlight the Rural Tourism. The increasing demand for new destinations, new experiences, for different realities and cultures, the need for contact with authentic heritage and the willingness to embark on the cocreation of experiences is the engine for the future development of tourism. The evolution of knowledge, the need to go beyond in the research on tourism, directs us to a new way of knowing, towards the strong presence of Tourism in Coastal Areas and the still fragile Tourism in the rural space. The need for this change and the meeting between the two realities, leads us to the choice of the central region of Portugal as a territory that offers us a shoreline with high environmental quality in combination with a strong presence of rurality, serving as the foundation for our research claims, in terms of geographic, economic, social and cultural elements. It is a region fertile in resources which can contribute to define and support strategies for the municipalities studied, evolving into a more competitive and complementary tourism development. Thus, this thesis argues on the need to invest on the research potential associated with this fusion of different tourism models that may be complementary in the cities studied (nestled in the center of Portugal) and that have in common the Ria Aveiro, which welcomes them between its two arms . The municipalities of Ilhavo, Mira and Vagos, are coastal counties, mostly rural, and willing to promote and implement development and cooperation strategies among them, since that more than the geographical proximity, it is the common cultural and heritage features that unites them, as well as a very close identity. The aim of this paper is to present a model of Coastal Tourism Development in Rural Areas, using as a case study the aforementioned municipalities. This model was created taking into account the key elements of Tourism, Rural Tourism and Tourism in Coastal Areas, focusing on its relationship, complementarity and sustainability.; [POR]O Turismo possui forte expressao economica na sociedade Portuguesa, e e um dos sectores de actividade mais relevantes para o pais.
