Abstract
The Secretariado de Propaganda Nacional (SPN) of the Portuguese dictatorship is essential in order to understand how the Salazarist Estado Novo in Portugal was conceived and consolidated. Its role as an instrument of propaganda used to spread the regime’s political ideas, based on the socalled «politics of spirit», had an extraordinary influence on the control of the public opinion and the Portuguese media, which suffered an ironclad censorship that had a very negative effect on freedom of speech and the press. In this article we approach the main elements of the strategy, its structure and the SPN organization in the 30’s, based on several documental sources that provide insightful data on the Portuguese fascist regime.

RESUMEN: El Secretariado de Propaganda Nacional (SPN) de la dictadura portuguesa es fundamental para comprender como se gestó y se consolidó el Estado Novo salazarista en Portugal. Su papel como aparato de propaganda encargado de la difusión de los principios políticos del régimen, sustanciados en la denominada «política do espírito», tuvo una extraordinaria importancia en el control de la opinión pública y los medios de comunicación lusos, que sufrieron una férrea censura, con consecuencias muy perjudiciales para la libertad de expresión y de prensa en Portugal. Que pretende estudiar las claves más importantes sobre la estrategia, estructura y la organización del SPN en los años treinta, está basado en diversas fuentes documentales que aportan datos interesantes para el conocimiento del régimen fascista portugués.
