Abstract
The test, by high speed cinematography and simultaneous recording of various electrical and optical parameters, of graphite arcs ignited on different substances, gives rise to the following points: the sudden voltage changes are related to its geometrical distortions; these voltage changes have no effect on the light emission of the positive column of the discharge; the random variations of light intensity are due to changes of thermic conditions governing the anodic sample evaporation.
