Tubo-Ovarian Abscess Following Small Bowel Perforation Caused by Entamoeba histolytica

Abstract

Background: We report an unusual case of tubo-ovarian abscess directly associated with an Entamoeba histolytica infection. Amebiasis is a significant source of morbidity in developing nations; high-risk groups in the United States include travelers, immigrants, migrant workers, immunocompromised, and institutionalized populations. Case Report: A woman with a recent documented E. histolytica infection was found to have a complex left ovarian cyst while undergoing an abdominal ultrasound to evaluate hepatic involvement from amebiasis. The patient subsequently went to surgery and was found to have a sigmoid perforation and left tubo-ovarian abscess. Conclusion: We believe this to be the first reported tubo-ovarian abscess caused by small bowel perforation secondary to E. histolytica infection.
